Barbados opposition party chooses new leader

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados -- In a replay of the situation in 2008, the opposition Barbados Labour Party has chosen Mia Mottley to replace Owen Arthur as party leader following its narrow defeat in the Barbados general election last Thursday.

Having stepped down as party leader in favour of Mottley in 2008, following that year’s election loss, former prime minister Arthur regained the leadership in 2010 following Mottley’s acrimonious ouster by the party in a vote of no confidence.

Arthur served as prime minister from 1994 to 2008, when the BLP was defeated by the Democratic Labour Party (DLP).

Mottley served as a minister in the 14-year BLP administration and as deputy prime minister for the final five years.
