BRIDGETOWN, Barbados -- Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Richard Sealy, has responded to the recent shooting of two British tourists in Barbados last Sunday.

Ann Prior, 59, and her 72-year-old husband Philip were shot during a port call to the island as part of an 85-day world trip with P&O Cruises.

Mr Prior was hit on his left side and his wife, whose handbag was stolen in the attack in the capital, Bridgetown, was shot in her right thigh. Both have now been discharged from hospital.

The couple were on a three-month cruise around the Caribbean and South America on board the Adonia, which left Southampton in January and is due to arrive back in the UK on April 3.

In a statement on Wednesday, the minister gave the assurance that the government was indeed taking the matter very seriously and that the Royal Barbados Police Force had moved swiftly on the matter.

Following the incident on Sunday a team of senior police investigators began immediate investigations and two people were taken into custody on Monday for enquiries. The two suspects have now been charged and were due to make a court appearance on Wednesday.

The shooting was raised in the Barbados parliament on Monday when opposition leader Mia Mottley expressed concern about increasing acts of violence against visitors, describing such attacks as "acts of economic terrorism".
